The first day of games at Worlds 2024 consisted of MAD Lions KOI playing against Vietnamese team Vikings Esports, and Pacific’s PSG Talon facing off against paiN Gaming. These games covered a wide variety of regional audiences for League of Legends esports, allowing the tournament to reach impressively high viewership for its first stage. Compared to 2023, peak viewership increased by about 300,000 for the first day of the Play-In.

In total, the first day of matches accumulated 5.33M Hours Watched, which was again a significant increase compared to last year, about 2.35M hours of watch time more. PaiN Gaming are representatives of Brazil, whose CBLOL circuit is one of the fastest-growing regions in the entire world. Support for the Taiwanese PSG Talon roster was strong on the opening day, with more than a hundred thousand Chinese-speaking fans tuning in to the games. This audience was sizeable, but not able to compete against the Vietnamese and English audiences, which were the most popular languages of the opening day. Vietnamese audiences have grown to become one of the most influential regions for League of Legends viewership, and many Vietnamese fans were present on the opening day to support their team Vikings Esports.

Korean audiences are usually the most powerful demographic for League of Legends esports, but viewership from this region was low on the first day, without any Korean teams competing. The exit of Twitch from South Korea has shaken up these audiences for 2024, with most of the region’s viewership coming from the official YouTube broadcast, or community casters across Korean streaming platforms CHZZK and AfreecaTV. The LCK also hosted a new official broadcast on CHZZK, but it reached very few viewers, with the majority of the Korean audience sticking with familiar broadcasts.

Most of the event’s viewership came from Twitch streams of the event, many of which reflected co-casters and community members covering the event and supporting their favourite regional teams. Let’s take a look at the most popular broadcaster of Worlds 2024 opening day.
